The road less traveled

"The Road Less Traveled" could be the title for this entire trip. Nova Scotia and Newfoundland are not considered high on the vacation destination list for most Americans. But on the road less traveled are even smaller roads that are less traveled.

International Appalachian Trail
Sometimes the road less traveled doesn't have roads 😲



Now here is the payoff for traveling to the end of the road...


Canso
A small town on the far eastern tip of Nova Scotia. The largest building in town is the curling center.



Meat Cove
At the northern tip of Nova Scotia. Where the Atlantic and the St Lawrence Seaway meet.



Louisbourgh
The far eastern coast of Cape Breton.  Site of one of the original French Forts in North America



Rose Blanche
Literally the end of the road on the south western coast of Newfoundland. Anything further out on that route is only reachable by boat or air. Further out on this coast is listed in the “Next to Impossible Destinations” to travel wiki. Along with Area 51 :-)



Next up on the road less traveled...L'Anse aux Meadows...The most northern point in Newfoundland where the vikings first landed in North America.

Tesla note
When driving the road less traveled with a Tesla this pops up all the time:



The car navigation system only knows about Tesla chargers (superchargers and chargers Tesla has installed). It doesn't know about the myriad of 3rd party chargers out there. So when you wander out of it's network it lets you know that you are on your own. Generally it only pops up when the car thinks you can't get back to the last place you charged.

Interestingly enough it does add places we have charged to the list of charging spots. So every campground, third party supercharger, friend's home, etc that we have charged is also listed. Even though they are not associated with Tesla.

Long version Since picking up the Tin Poodle outside of Las Vegas we've travelled just over 3000 miles (and still have about 500 more to go).  We've travelled through nine states (with at least two more to go).  And we've charged at twenty Tesla superchargers. It's that last number, twenty superchargers, that I'm going to write about today.  More specifically how to charge a Tesla on a cross country trip while towing a trailer.  Here's the breakdown: Overnight charging We made a point of only staying in campgrounds that had electrical infrastructure at our site.  Mostly 240V/50A and occasionally 120V/30A. We could then plug into an outlet and have a full charge by the next AM.  Pretty much the same as we do at home in the garage. Extended boondocking

We just got back from three weeks on the road. Almost all of it was boondocking without electrical hookups.  Without an external electricity source the battery in our trailer can probably supply electricity for about 4-5 days before needing to be recharged.  We were able to go ten days easily by  keeping the trailer plugged into the 7-way connector on the Model X almost all the time. We only needed to plug the trailer into an electrical outlet once during the trip in order to recharge our lead acid trailer battery. We did that during a planned overnight stay when we moving from one location the next. Overall we were really happy with our ability to stay off grid with this combo. Some observations. Over one ten day stretch our trailer battery went from 100% to 52% (120aH from trailer battery) Over another eight day stretch our trailer battery went from 100% to 70% (~72AH from trailer battery) The MX on average was supplying ~2-3amp/hour to the trailer (depending on SOC of the trailer ba

Just returned from our “quick”, five week coast to coast jaunt and back.  Some quick stats. tldr version We traveled 7,000 miles cross country and back with our Bowlus and paid $0 in fuel costs First day of trip Detailed version Mileage traveled 7,000 miles traveled in total (6,000 miles towing Bowlus, 1,000 miles sans trailer) Energy used 3280 kWh (2904 kWh towing, 376 kWh not towing) Average energy consumption 484 watt/mile towing (highway speed range 55-67 mph) 376 watt/mile not towing (highway speed range 70-85 mph) *Cost of “fuel” for trip $0 (Compared to ~$3000 in gas if we had done the trip with a similarly sized SUV.) *We have unlimited free supercharging with our Model X.  If we had a newer Model X and had to pay for electricity the cost would have been ~$1200.  This still would have been significantly less than towing with an ICE vehicle.
